Fairview Southdale Breast Center now offers breast MRI, a higher level of diagnostic capabilities to patients with breast abnormalities, a procedure that is capable of seeing small lesions that are undetected with mammography and ultrasound. The hospital’s new MRI breast scan system includes highly sophisticated computer-aided detection analysis software (CADstream), that allows the radiologist to much more effectively detect abnormalities on the MR images, evaluate their potential for malignancy and accurately determine the extent of an abnormality.
On July 12, Fairview Southdale took breast MRI one step further with MRI-guided core needle biopsy. When the MRI reveals a breast lesion that cannot be seen with mammography or ultrasound, the patient can now have a biopsy of the lesion using MRI guidance. This procedure, combined with the CAD stream technology, allows for the possibility of earlier diagnosis and more accurate staging and treatment of breast cancer. “Breast MRI and MRI-guided core needle biopsy provide information that was previously unavailable to clinicians,” says Richard Carlson, M.D., Fairview Southdale Breast Center radiologist. “I am so very pleased and that we now have at Fairview Southdale a breast MRI scan system that is absolutely top-notch, state-of-the-art.”
