Serving your needs
Fairview Southdale Hospital knows you have many questions about joint replacement surgery. That is why we offer a class informing patients about what happens before during and after surgery. People who know what to expect often have a smoother recovery. We suggest you attend the class two weeks before your surgery. To sign up, call Fairview On Call at 612-672-7272.
Before you arrive
You may receive a copy of Before Your Surgery from your doctor's office. This booklet explains the tests you will need before surgery, what to bring to the hospital and where to park. If you do not receive this booklet, please ask your doctor for one.
What to expect
During class, you will learn about your surgery, hospital stay, rehabilitation and long-range goals. You will also learn relaxation methods to help with pain after surgery.
This is a change to meet some of the Fairview Southdale Hospital staff that will care for you during your stay. Feel free to ask question at any time. We will answer every question you have, or we will help you find the answer before the end of class.
You will meet with a nurse, therapists and a social worker.
- The nurse will discuss your place of care which includes what will happen before, during and after surgery. Fairview Southdale Orthopedic and Spine Service team's comprehensive approach to your care will include information about what to do the morning of surgery and for three months afterward. The nurse may also talk about lifestyle changes.
- The therapists will tell you about your exercise program and the equipment you may need after surgery. You will also learn how to move safely with your new joint.
