If you or someone you love is recovering from a stroke, group education and support can help. Our educational courses offer vital information to both stroke survivors and family members as you work to regain skills and quality of life.
Outpatient stroke rehabilitation
Outpatient therapy is available at Fairview Southdale Hospital. Our experienced and well-qualified physical, occupational, and speech-language therapists provide a range of therapies to meet your specific needs. Options include the new Partial Weight-Bearing Therapy with Lite Gait equipment. Call 952-924-1340 to learn more or to set up an evaluation.
StrokeWise classes
This four session course is for stroke survivors and family members. The StrokeWise course provides the tools and resources you need to make wise decisions and to enjoy life again. You’ll learn current information about stroke treatment, new rehabilitation therapies, exercise, emotions and healthy living after stroke.
Stroke Thrivers group
This group provides a series of educational topics with opportunities for discussion or questions. Meetings are held at Fairview Southdale Hospital. Attend once, or every month at no charge.
Aphasia conversation and support group
Aimed to help particpants achieve a better quality of life following a stoke, this group emphasizes continued rehabilitation of speech and language. It is is led by a spech pathologist.
Stroke Tai Chi classes
TaiChi helps to improve balance, flexibility, and stress relief. An ancient Chinese exercise and meditation, Tai chi uses slow, rhythmic movements in a variety of postures. The emphasis is on relaxation, balance and focus. Many participants report decreased stress, lowered blood pressure, and improved health. Tai Chi is not an aerobic form of exercise. Beginners welcome.
When: Wednesdays 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.

Instructor: Ruth Ann Plourde, certified Tai Chi instructor
Cost: $32 for eight weeks. (Observe one class at no charge.)
Peer visitors
Support is also available from our Peer Visitors–stroke survivors and caregivers who have received specialized training– provide daily support through visits with patients and families.
